A Wisconsin-based advocacy group is challenging a federal government grant to a Christian college as a violation of church-state separation.
The Freedom From Religion Foundation, headquartered in Madison, argues that Alaska Christian College in Soldotna has received more than $1 million in federal funding over the past two years.
“This is just promoting religion,” said Annie Laurie Gaylor, co-president of the Wisconsin group. Her organization filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Education in Wisconsin in late April.
College President Keith Hamilton defended the school’s federal grants, saying the school, which has only 37 students, “has spent the money in the manner that has been approved by the Department of Education.”
