AU Mourns Passing Of Two Devoted Church-State Activists
It is with great sadness that Americans United notes the passing of two of its committed activists.
Former AU Trustee Donald H. Erickson died July 11 at age 86. Don was an attorney in Omaha, Neb., who joined the AU Board in 1989, serving through 1994. He had a long-standing interest in church-state issues and had served as chairman of the Scottish Rite Masons’ First Amendment Committee. Don monitored events in Nebraska for Americans United and was especially concerned about bills diverting public funds to religious schools, insisting that this was a clear violation of the U.S. and Nebraska constitutions.
Longtime AU member and chapter organizer Sidney Goetz of St. Petersburg, Fla., died June 23 at age 94. Sid, who also served on AU’s National Advisory Council, was a determined activist who helped start numerous chapters in Florida and was a prolific writer of letters to the editor. Sidney organized church-state separation demonstrations and often traveled to the state capital to represent Americans United in Tallahassee.
The enthusiasm and commitment of both men will be greatly missed.
