Thank You, Barry Lynn, For 25 Remarkable Years Of Service To Americans United!

In September of 1992, a man named Barry W. Lynn was named executive director of Americans United.

At the time, I’d been working at AU for five years, and I knew Barry by name and reputation. If you worked in the fields of civil liberties or social justice, you’d know Barry; that’s just the way it was. He was an important player in those areas.

Thanks To Trump, A Major Transgender Rights Case Has Been Derailed At The Supreme Court

The Supreme Court this morning announced that it is remanding and vacating the lower-court decision in Gloucester County School Board v. G.G., the first transgender-rights case that the high court had ever agreed to hear.

So what does this mean, in laypeople’s terms? The Supreme Court had scheduled oral arguments for March 28. Now those arguments won’t happen this month. Instead, the case is going back to a lower federal court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, for more deliberation.

A Maine Pagan Priest Can Wear Horns In An Official Photo

A Maine pagan has won the right to wear goat horns in a state-issued identification card. This is an example of the government treating all religions equally, and that’s a good thing.

Phelan Moonsong, 56, is a Pagan minister and a devotee of Pan. He has been wearing the goat horns since 2009, when he picked them up at a gathering of Pagan men.

To Moonsong, the horns are important religious attire.

The Nevada Supreme Court just decided to permanently block funding for a massive statewide school voucher program, which is great news for supporters of both church-state separation and public education.

In two cases decided today, the Nevada high court struck down S.B. 302, the law that created a voucher program to divert taxpayer dollars from public schools to private schools.

Texas Supreme Court Hears Cheerleaders Case

Americans United, the ACLU and the ACLU of Texas have urged the Texas Supreme Court to rule against a group of public school cheerleaders seeking the right to display Bible verses at football games. The groups filed a friend-of-the-court brief in July, arguing that the Kountze Independent School District should be able to prevent official representatives from endorsing religion at school events.

Frightening Five: Religious Right Legal Group Singles Out ‘Dangerous Enemies’ Of Christianity – And Guess Who Made The List?

On Friday a Religious Right legal group called the Liberty Institute published an article titled “5 Dangerous Enemies Against Your Christian Faith” on the site Charisma News.

Americans United made the top five! There we are, right alongside American Atheists, the American Humanist Association, the American Civil Liberties Union and the Freedom From Religion Foundation. (Sounds like good company to me –and don’t be sad that we’re number four; the list is alphabetical.)
