Ariz. House Of Representatives Assails Atheist Legislator For Non-Theistic Invocation

An Arizona state legislator was criticized after she offered a non-theistic invocation to open a session of the Arizona House on April 19.

Rep. Athena Salman (D), an atheist, spoke of the power of unity, justice and humanity, remarking, “In a nation often eager to be polarized in its views, allow us in this moment to recognize what we have in common: A deep-seated need to help create a more just and positive world.”

Around The World: Atheist Sentenced To Death In Saudi Arabia

The Saudi Arabian monarchy is punishing another citizen for choosing to leave Islam for atheism, continuing its streak of enforcing the harshest blasphemy laws in the world.

In April, Saudi Arabia sentenced Ahmad Al-Shamri, who was arrested in 2014, to death after years of Al-Shamri’s appealing the decision. Al-Shamri was charged with atheism and blasphemy after videos of him questioning Islam surfaced on social media years ago. The same year of Al-Shamri’s arrest, the Saudi Arabian king declared atheists “terrorists.”

Plate Shift

Shannon Morgan was merely trying to personalize her license plate to “8THEIST” when officials in New Jersey rejected it because they deemed it “objectionable."

The incident occurred in November 2013, and it took Morgan, a Leesburg, N.J., resident, by surprise. At the time, she thought the rejection was a technical problem, but it wasn’t. New Jersey officials’ reasoning was that an “8THEIST” plate “may carry connotations offensive to good taste and decency.”

The Last Political Taboo?

Abraham Lincoln faced his share of sharp criticism from political opponents during his career, but among the most stinging accusations against him may have been an implication that the future president was “an open scoffer at Christianity” – in other words, an atheist.

“That I am not a member of any Christian church, is true; but I have never denied the truth of the Scriptures; and I have never spoken with intentional disrespect of religion in general, or any denomination of Christians in particular,” Lincoln wrote in July 1846, shortly before winning election to Congress.
