A nation of 21 million where one in five claims no religious affiliation, Australia is nonetheless home to a number of Religious Right groups that are pushing the Conservative and Labor parties to pay attention to issues such as same-sex marriage, Reuters reported in late October.

A group called the Australian Christian Lobby has been joined by Catholic Cardinal George Pell in urging both major parties to keep in place a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage.

“Same-sex marriage and adoption change the meaning of marriage, family, parenting and childhood for everyone, not just for homosexual couples,” Pell said.
