Muslim Clerics Gaining Political Power In Iraq

A number of influential Shiite Muslim leaders in Iraq are calling for a theocracy similar to the one established in Iran, according to press reports.

The Associated Press reported on Dec. 4 that the "influence of Shiite clergy is so huge" that the prospect of a clergy-ruled state is a real possibility.

"In my view, an Islamic state can be set up in Iraq, but it will be an Islamic state of the Iraqi variety," a senior cleric said. "It will be an Islamic state that's open toward other civilizations."
