Americans Worry About Political Influence Of Religion

Americans are increasingly concerned over religion’s involvement with politics, according to a recent public opinion poll.

A USA Today/CNN/Gallup survey found that 48 percent of respondents believe religion has too much influence on politics. That number is up from 42 percent in 1996.

The poll, reported Nov. 23 by USA Today, showed that 40 percent of the respondents said religion has too little influence on politics, which represents a drop from 44 percent in 1996.

The survey found that 64 percent believe religion has too little influence on American morals. That number represents a 5-percent drop from 1996. Sixty-four percent of the poll’s respondents also said that moral values in America are getting worse.
