Wisconsin County Board Drops Opening Prayer

A Wisconsin county’s board has decided to replace its invocation prior to meetings with a “moment of reflection.”

The Eau Claire County Board of Supervisors voted 23-4 to move to a “moment of reflection,” after received a letter from the Freedom From Religion Foundation. The group urged members to stop meddling in theology and focus on county business.

Invocations prior to meetings have often taken the form of Christian prayers, though sometimes there have also been inspirational quotes.

Supervisor Sue Miller told the Eau Claire Leader-Telegram that she recalled offering a non-religious invocation, but was asked by another board member why her comments did not include references to God or Jesus.

“Whose god should I represent?” Miller said, noting that her constituents come from many faith perspectives as well as non-religious viewpoints.
