Russian Military Considers Orthodox Chaplains

Russian lawmakers are considering a bill that would reinstate Russian Orthodox chaplains in the military.

Radio Free Europe reported that President Vladimir Putin supports the measure because he believes that the chaplains would increase morale in the armed forces.

Church leaders also are backing the move. Archpriest Dmitry Smirnov says that no one should question the role of the Orthodox Church in Russian society.

“There was neither consultation nor agreement between the Defense Ministry and Muslim organizations,” said Dmitry. “Agreement on this sort of cooperation exists only between the ministry and the Russian Orthodox Church.”
