A Utah House ethics committee is investigating charges that a state legislator tried to bribe a colleague into supporting school vouchers.
Rep. Susan Lawrence claims Rep. Greg Hughes offered her as much as $50,000 in campaign donations if she would support voucher subsidies for religious and other private schools, according to the Salt Lake Tribune.
Hughes denies that he has done anything wrong and insists that the complaint against him is politically motivated.
Vouchers have been a hot topic in Utah politics in recent years. In 2007, voters defeated a voucher scheme on the November ballot by the whopping margin of 62-38 percent. The measure had been approved by the state legislature after wealthy voucher boosters spent large sums of money promoting the concept.
