Government at all levels must represent all citizens. When government bodies open meetings with prayers, inevitably some people are excluded. Even so-called “non-sectarian” prayers can have this effect. Americans United believes there should be no official prayers before government meetings. Individual lawmakers are free to pray on their own, but they should not presume to pray on behalf of their diverse constituents.
