Public schools should not erect religious displays. Religious symbols may be used in class only if they are part of a larger instructional effort (such as a class teaching about religion). Public schools may close for religious holidays if large numbers of students and staff will be absent. Schools should strive to accommodate those students from minority religions by allowing days off for their holidays and permitting make-up work and tests.
