Congressional Panel Wanted to Ignore Real Threats To Religious Freedom

Yesterday a subcommittee of the House Judiciary Committee convened a hearing on “The State of Religious Liberty in America.” It was supposed to be yet another installment in a long-running series: opponents of LGBTQ equality and reproductive rights seek to promote discrimination under the guise of religious freedom.

Washington Supreme Court Says There’s No Constitutional Right To Discriminate Against Same-Sex Couples

Today, the Supreme Court of the state of Washington issued an important ruling, unanimously holding that a business can’t ignore the state anti-discrimination law and refuse to provide flowers for a same-sex couple’s wedding.

‘So-Called Patriots' Attack The Rule Of Law

Every so often, right-wing commentator Pat Buchanan lurches out of the far-right fever swamp where he has resided for the past 50 years to offer all of us some pearls of wisdom.

His latest is an old standby: If you don’t like a court ruling, find a way to shut down the court.

Another Court, Ruling Against Trump’s Muslim Ban, Agrees With AU’s Religious Freedom Arguments

Yesterday, a judge on the U.S. District Court in Alexandria, Va., issued a preliminary injunction that prevents the Trump administration from enforcing its unconstitutional Muslim ban in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Republican Sen. Jeff Monroe sponsored the bill to “protect the teaching of certain scientific information,” which allows teachers to introduce “in an objective scientific manner the strengths and weaknesses of scientific information.”

Although some Religious Right leaders have remained mum on criticizing President Donald J. Trump’s actions, a growing number of  conservative evangelical leaders are standing in solidarity with refugees, as a recently published full-page advertisement in The Washington Post indicates.

One-Third Of U.S. Residents Say You Must Be Christian To Be ‘Truly American’

I was born in the United States, as were my parents and three-quarters of my grandparents. I was educated at public schools, I pay taxes and I vote. I’ve spent most of my adult life working as a journalist and now for an organization that advocates for religious freedom, so you could say I live and breathe the First Amendment.

But according to a third of my fellow citizens, I’m not “truly American” because I’m not a Christian.

A Persecuted Refugee’s Religious Beliefs Should Not Matter

A lot has been said about President Donald J. Trump’s travel ban targeting seven Muslim-majority countries and blocking all refugees worldwide. A recurring argument, it seems, is that Trump has a moral obligation to prioritize Christian refugees and other minority-religion refugees from Muslim-majority countries – something he went on the record saying he would do
